I remember we got this 12 inch in to XM a few years back. I had heard Cappadonna was living in Baltimore, supposedly driving a cab for a living, but I'm not sure about that and am too lazy at the moment to look into it. Dude definitely can rap..as for whether you can understand what the hell he's talking about, that may be up for individual interpretation. Apparently this is from his 2003 album "The Struggle," but I didn't check it..or at least I don't recall listening to it. If you listened to it & have an opinion, feel free to chime in with a comment. Or if you like/dislike this joint, let me know what you think. Regardless, this song stood out to me then, and I still keep it in my collection. Wu Tang Forever.

A few weeks back I had the pleasure of interviewing DJ Shadow with my buddy KB for Subsoniq Radio. Shadow's 5th studio album "The Less You Know, The Better" just dropped in early October.

In our conversation, Shadow spoke at length about a number of topics, including some of the folks who inspire him (Bambaattaa, Premier, Mannie Fresh etc,) what it was like working with Zack de la Rocha, & why he was surprised by the feedback he received from his 2006 album, "The Outsider."

So I was watching this sweet movie with Katherine Heigl and Fergie's husband aka Tad Mullinix the other day. Kind of a lame movie, actually, but whatever. I'm at the point in the movie where the dude figures out he done messed up...and miraculously, it coincides with the exact moment that the semi-fly female lead discovers that she can't-live-with-yet-can't-live-without the dude. (You know how it goes.) Anyway, I'm watching (drying tears, fingers crossed, anxiously praying to heaven) to see if things are gonna work out for this love-starved pair. And hark! What's that beautiful, soothing song I hear creeping into my consciousness?

Why, if I didn't know any better, I'd say that's the piano that Nashiem Myrick used to produce "Queen B" as recorded by the bitch with that platinum grammar!!?!!

This story doesn't end there tho...so next, Katherine races to the airport, but she's too late, so she returns home in despair, only to find the dude there waiting to patch things up and reunite the family!!!! Sorry for no spoiler alert...but honestly, you should consider yourself lucky that you didn't get sucked into watching this sappy excuse for a love story.

(BTW, I also watched Denzel Washington's worst movie ever aka "Unstoppable" the other day. I recommend that over this one above, actually. Especially due to the way-out-of-place Tyler-Perry-influenced end credit theme music. Rosario Dawson was amazing in that one, too.)

Although I've gotten rid of a bunch of records in recent years, I still have a good sized collection. I don't know that I'll ever get rid of all of them, under any circumstances. For me, there are few things in this world as grounding and energizing as playing my records; every time I put the needle to the groove, I'm reminded of why I DJ and why I love music as much as I do. This stuff keeps me sane.

And while I did not grow up on house music, I'm thankful to the folks who have put me up on electronic music over the years, be it House, Electro, Drum n Bass and whatever other iterations of computer-based music that have found their way into my crates.

Lately I've been re-visiting this excellent compilation from BBE Records called "Mad Styles & Crazy Visions," which was put together by none other than Louie Vega of Masters At Work. (The compilation is available as a 4-LP un-mixed collection, or as a 3-CD pack, with one disc being the mixed set from Louie, and the other 2 containing the un-mixed tunes.)

Here is one of the songs that stands out to me. I don't know much of anything about the artist Abstract Truth, the vocalist Monique Bingham, or the remixer Matthias "Matty" Heilbronn, but I know enough to pass this along and let you in on how great this music is. When I read those words and I think about music, names like Marilyn Manson come to mind, or even Sly and the Family Stone or Arrested Development (just on some stream of consciousness, really)..or more recently, I wrote about a dope song from Nina Sky called, fittingly, "Beautiful People."

The kid Chris Brown has certainly taken some heat in past years for his treatment of then lady-in-his-life Rihanna, and like many of you, I've got my own opinion on that whole deal. It's hard to support artists at times when they go wrong in the real world. But, I try to recognize that nobody is perfect, and people can change. I'm not saying Brown has his act together or anything like that, because frankly, I don't really follow him like that, so I don't know. But, my man Supa Qool DJ Quartermaine has brought something to my attention recently that definitely piques my interest and has me wondering what could be...

I can't really say that I'm feeling the Benny Benassi-produced original of this song here, because it doesn't quite hit the mark for what my ears want.

BUT, hold up!! Q breathes a different life into this tune, and makes it into something that house, hip-hop and r&b lovers can vibe to. Yet another case where the b-side wins...or, the remix, or whatever...you get the drift!

So I said I'd make more of an effort to share & showcase some of the tunes I'm loving and listening to these days...here goes!

Whether you know the name or not, you very likely know their voices, because Nina Sky have been on some pretty big records in their time. Move Ya Body, Hold You Down...well, I guess that might be about it(!?), but still, those are 2 big songs in my book!! As I think about it, what's most appealing about their sound is that it immediately reminds me of New York...which, I suppose makes sense since they are from Queens.

Anyways, Nina Sky kind of disappeared for a period, but they have resurfaced recently with a new EP called 'The Other Side'...and their sound has definitely grown a bit. While I'm not enthralled by every song on the EP, they DO have some great stuff on there.

It's nice to hear their Sagat-borrowing "Funk Dat" rendition ("You Ain't Got It,") and "Only You" is a good one also. But the real hit on this EP is "Beautiful People." Just some feel-good party stuff...kinda like what put them on the map in the first place. I can only hope that DJs aren't sleeping on this one, especially in New York.

So I was driving the other night and popped in my CD copy of "Reverse Discourse" from my man Joe Beats...it had been a while. A long while in fact. But, without fail, as track 1 got underway, and seemlessly blended into track 2, I quickly recalled why I fell in love with these sounds in the first place.

I won't pontificate too too much here, but just believe me when I say it, that Joe is truly one of THE BEST true school hip-hop producers of our time. Further, he's got the mindset of a DJ and most of his solo albums play as a continuous mix...which makes sense since much of his work is of the instrumental variety.

I had the chance to catch up with Joe back in 2008 when he rolled through DC on tour, and we sat down for an interview that aired on my show "Pitch Control" on XM. We talked about a lot of things, but more than anything, just our mutual love of hip-hop, and DJs and stuff.

Below is a link to the interview as it aired. I will listen to this over & over again..it was one of those instances where meeting an artist in person re-affirmed what I thought I already knew about them: this cat lives hip-hop.

I was DJing a brunch the other day, filling in for a friend. The weather kinda sucked, but I always love spinning brunches, because more often than not, it's an opportunity for me to play a lot of soul, r&B and funk music that I do not often get the chance to play out otherwise.

One of the diners at this particular spot approached me to ask about a certain song I had played. I was glad to hear that folks were enjoying the selections, and especially when it's such a great tune like this one.

I used to cut up a lot of the pictures from The Source magazine each month. The wall of my bedroom (at home, and school too for the first couple years) was a collage of all these images from hip-hop magazines, album covers, tour posters, you name it. But one image that stands out in my memory was from The Source, or maybe it was XXL...either way, it was one of those sidebars, like Unsigned Hype or whatever. And it was the 'ebonics-to-english' translation (I think that's what they called it) of Biggie's "One More Chance." Although I can't find the original image, I located the translation online, so check it out. Still pretty hilarious today:

I love music. and I love DJing too. What I don't really love is that everyone thinks they are a DJ nowadays and that mad people flood the market with fancy-looking "mixtapes" and other projects. But, as in anything, the cream always rises to the top.

I've uploaded a few of my own mixes here in the past, and I stand by them. I've also shined a light on some cats whose music and craft I admire. I figure, as much music as I listen to, maybe I should be doing this more often. So, what I'm here to do today is to share with you a couple mixes that have resonated with me in recent years.

First up, a mix CD that really stands out in my mind as a message, from my man DJ Eskimo..."The Pulpit." There's tracks on here I still don't know what or who they are, but I love it. I'm not even that hard-pressed to figure out who the artists are or what the songs are called, because the manner in which this is presented is what makes it proper that we call this cat a true DJ. The mixing, the selection, the pace and the energy...top notch. The one part of this mix that folks ALWAYS seem to mention when I hear them talk about it is Eskimo's Sade blend...which, for the record, is ridiculous.

Another DJ who I've become familiar with in my time in DC is Roctakon. He doesn't live here anymore, but I first heard of he and his crew The Goonies and The Trooperz crew back around 99/2000 when they were hosting Open Table events and bringing cats like P-Trix to town to showcase. It was dope to see big-named DJs like P-Trix do their thing, but to be honest, some of the talent here in DC have reached some pretty high heights as well...and I still look to these cats as some of the best I've ever heard.

Anyways, I've heard a couple edits that Roctakon has done over the years, though I'd not heard a mix of his before. So, when he dropped this "Finding Directions" mix not too long ago, I felt compelled to pick it up. I used to love scratching, trying to be a battle DJ and all that...and I still love rocking parties and blending, etc......"Finding Directions" is definitely geared more towards the dancefloor than anything...but there's more to it than just playing records. As Turntable Lab describes it: "this is all about disco, house and techno...but even I was taken back by how hardcore it is." True indeed. So, while it may take a couple listens to fully grasp all that's going on in this mix, I'll venture to say that it's damn near timeless.

I remember when I was in high school getting a Dilated Peoples "The Platform" maxi-cassette single, with the remixes and maybe another song or two on it. Same program on both sides. I burned that joint all summer long in my tape deck. I recall taking lunch break from the bank where I was working and just marveling at the cuts that Babu ripped on those tracks, just in dumbfounded that a DJ could make a record sound like that. To this day, I'm not sure I know exactly how he does it or if I'd even believe it if I saw it in person. As a Beat Junkie fan, I try to keep an ear out for what Babu and crew are up to, and so it was cool to see this recent reminder that the apple never falls far from the tree:

Seeing that post jogged my memory back a few years when I checked out Peanut Butter Wolf here in DC and grabbed a copy of the Stones Throw tour promo CD. Long story short, there's some ill music on this CD. I played this bit (below) a few times on my show on XM back when, and I love what it embodies. It's all in the family...check my man Oh No, Aloe Blacc, and the junior jedi himself, Babu's son Niko ripping the mic & telling tales of a youngster living life in California...CHECK THE RHYME!!!

When the 1-Year Anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing happened a little while back, it sort of caught me by surprise...not like I keep track of these things or anything, but it just felt like time flew by in the past year. The impact of Michael Jackson is surely hard to describe, but needless to say he changed the game in a major way.

I've heard many folks describe Roc Raida's influence on DJs and turntablism similarly. Dude was truly an innovator and someone who pushed things forward in his time. It's been a year since Grandmaster Roc Raida passed, and in that time I've read the thoughts of many other DJs who were inspired by and had the opportunity to meet Raida over the years. I too have been inspired and influenced by Raida, but I really think pretty much all DJs were who came up in the 80s, 90s and even the new generation. The X-Men were just superstars in my mind. I remember copping the X-Men videos with tons of live footage from Fat Beats in NY and at Raida's and Rob Swift's cribs, etc. They were just incredible! And then to be able to see them live and get to meet and speak with Raida and the guys at a show? It doesn't get much better... Soo dope! Dude was extremely humble and just willing to listen and talk with you like he really cared to be a part of the conversation. That says a lot about who he was.

Anyways, I love the X-Men and what they mean to DJing...and I got to speak with Raida a couple times in my life, the last of which was early in 2009 when he was on the road with Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star and they came thru the XM studios here in DC. I was watching Busta and Spliff perform in our studio, and I noticed from afar, a DJ that looked familiar in back of them...rockin a BIG L t-shirt...sure enough, the one & only Roc Raida! This made perfect sense to me (and I told him it after the show when I spoke with him,) for him to be working with Busta...I've seen Busta on-stage before, and this cat is a MONSTER!!! Busta and Spliff put on a DOPE SHOW, no question..so to see one of hip-hop's all-time greatest DJs working with them for their live show was a match made in heaven in my mind. In speaking with Raida, he was very gracious, humble, and always open to talk.

If you're not familiar with the WHAT FM GONG SHOW, you're about to get familiar...Roc Raida was a genius, an incredibly funny man and also an ill DJ...and so much more. Recently I came upon the website of my man Knocksquared aka Doug Lazy aka my former co-worker at XM and an all-around good dude...and dope artist and producer!

Through working with him I learned of his back catalog as a musician, most notably "Let It Roll" and some of the other jams from his "Gettin' Crazy" album from the early 90s. I guess the term hip-house is used most often to describe this style, and in my opinion, there's not a ton of hip-house tracks that stand the test of time (maybe I'm wrong??) but the BDK-sampling "Let It Roll" definitely does. Anyway, my real reason for posting today was to share some more recent stuff with you...it's not a brand new track that's hitting on radio right now or anything...but much like all good music with staying power, this should reside in your crates going forward. Similar to what you hear in "Let It Roll" and other cuts he's done, this remix from Knock has such great style...drum programming, keys, Youtube porn (haha) it's all so fresh...I've not heard a ton of Snoop remixes, or maybe I've just not heard a lot that are worth remembering at all. Meant to share this a loooong while ago...but here it is, the message and the music still hold true:

One of the groups that I became aware of by hosting Pitch Control each week quickly became a favorite of mine and I wanted to take a moment to share a little bit from them..out of Utrecht, Holland: C-Mon & Kypski. These guys are on some other isht. Hip-hop, electronic, bollywood, you name it, there are so many different styles and sounds present in what they do. And believe me when I say it, these cats can rock a party. From what I understand, they are quite popular in their native Holland, and their US fanbase is certainly growing.

The guys have a record out now (2010) called "We Are Square" and they'll be in the US (NY, Boston, PA) in the coming months. Check their site for details and keep in touch with them via Twitter.

If you're not familiar with their music and you wanna check these cats out, of course you could go to their sites (and I encourage you to do so,) but what purpose would I be serving if all I did was point you elsewhere?? Beats By The Pound built their name producing for the No Limit camp years ago, or at least that's how I came to know of them. More recently, BBTP member KLC appeared on the radar with a solo record through Koch (remember them?) that I got my hands on (one of the perks of working in radio) and brought home on the strength of the name because it struck my memory. A couple few years ago (it was Thanksgiving time...so just a little over 2 years ago actually) my homie Gavin asked me to put together a mix for his show on XM where we were both working at the time...me hosting Pitch Control and he hosting In-DEED. Good times for sure.

Anyway, since I was digging deep for music all the time for my weekly show, I definitely had some tricks up my sleeve and I opted to put together a live mini-mix to demonstrate a little bit of what my show was all about, but as well, to put my own personal DJing touch on it since my role on Pitch Control was moreso selector than actual DJing DJ. Soooo, with my recently-purchased Serato setup, I pressed record and set it off like this...

I picked each of these tunes for a reason...Netik is a sick DJ...GB has a beautiful sound...Lorn is crazy with his (though I haven't heard anything lately from him?)...2tall is certainly a favorite of longstanding...and my dude Alibi is yet another talent from north of the border who is if nothing else consistent (but I'll add, also a great talent.)

P.S. one of the staple programs of satellite radio, and some friends of mine, Subsoniq were just recently pulled from the airwaves after 7-8 years of running things in terms of progressive and dope Hip-Hop music. Check them out and speak up to the powers that be...the world needs radio like Subsoniq!!

Cut Chemist on Pitch Control

I had a lot of fun hosting Pitch Control on XM for the few years or so that I got to do it, and one of the best things about the whole deal was getting to meet some of my favorite DJs, producers, etc. It's been more than a year since I stopped hosting the show, but I wanted to share some of the highlights from the archives since this stuff is fairly timeless (at least, in my opinion!) One experience that was real dope was when Cut Chemist came thru town on tour to support his debut solo record 'The Audience's Listening' a couple years back. Going into our meeting, most of what I knew of Cut was through his work with J5, but as a DJ, I was up to speed on some of the other stuff he's done as well. All that aside, I can't begin to say how cool of a cat he is and how enjoyable it was to speak with a dude who loves music as much as he does. Growing up in Massachusetts, I remember traveling to NY/NJ to visit family and being real amped to hear Hot 97 and other NY-based radio stations because they always seemed to be way ahead of things back home. And they certainly were, this is back when there were regional differences in radio & music, and it would take maybe 6-8 weeks for a hit in NY to make it's way to the airwaves in MA on Jam'n 94.5. I used to have a blank tape in my boombox and wait up in my bedroom for the Top 9 at 9 each week...craziness. Anyway, I wasn't the most on top of everything back in the 90's, but I was digging for records at this spot Al-Bums (R.I.P.) on Highland Street in Worcester, and my dude over there this one time gave me the go ahead to check out the basement, where (I would soon discover) there were mad records. From that point forward, each time I visited, I'd check out the first floor, but ultimately make my way downstairs, where things were a bit dusty, dark, wet, and the ceiling had a tendency to bend and dip overhead...a bit hazardous I suppose you might say. But yeah, any DJ knows you gotta dig deep for the real joints, and I definitely found some great records downstairs. One of the coolest things about digging at Al-Bums though was meeting a cat who I would consider a friend, a guy who is definitely a dope DJ and producer, fellow native of the Holden/Worcester area, DJ Shame. For those that don't know Shame (for real though, I didn't know who he was when I met him, or who Edo or L da Headtoucha were when Shame would mention them at the time,) he's part of the acclaimed Vinyl Reanimators crew. Beat-heads and DJs may recall they put out a bunch of remixes back in the day, Fast Life by G Rap & Nas, the Back to the Grill remix, and of course a bunch of dope tracks with both L da Headtoucha and Edo G (amongst others.)

I used to buy records off Shame since he was getting serviced from a bunch of labels. He's got more records than anyone I know. Traveling Through Sampleland is regarded as one of the first (if not the first) sample-based mixtapes; it dropped in '93.

Dude definitely knows a lot about music and has amazing music on his shelves and in his crates...if you were one of the lucky ones to peep his XM show over the past few years, you know how deep it gets ("Vinyl Reanimations" on XM 65 The Rhyme...RIP.) You might still be able to get those mixes over at Shame's site, so hit him up.

Apparently a lot of folks came down hard on Kanye after the MTV business the other weekend. Look, I don't think Kanye should've done what he did, but people need to understand it for what it is...a cat being disruptive and speaking his mind. He was out of place for interrupting Taylor Swift in that manner, but I'm not going to fault Kanye for saying what he said. Whatever ignorant/racist messages surfaced after this once-influential music video award broadcast, folks need to understand that just like in anything, bad news travels fast...negative comments always get the most press. So let's not get too carried away with all this.

People want Kanye to scale it back, tone it down, whatever...ok. If he does have problems (coping, addiction, whatever,) hopefully he's got family and friends close to him so that he can get whatever care he may be in need of. I've said it before and I'll say it again...Kanye is an entertainer...dude brought hip-hop performances back in recent years (see his SNL appearances.) Is he a primadonna at times? I don't doubt it. So long as he's promoting music and art in a positive/progressive manner, I don't really have an issue with him speaking his mind. Of course, it would be nice if he did it in a way that didn't rock the boat and cause such commotion, but that unfortunately isn't always the case.

While it's possible this MTV deal was a sign of what's to come and where he's at, I do think he can return to form and get it together. After all, in terms of mass appeal, he's one of the few cats worth keeping an ear/eye to.

All this got me to thinking about some of the reasons why I'm a fan of Kanye in the first place. A couple years ago during some down time in their touring schedule, I had the opportunity to chat with his (now former) DJ, A-Trak. We spoke about a number of topics, but one focal point was the time he'd spent with Kanye on the road and in the studio. As a DJ myself, these two joining forces was incredible not just because of the amazing talent they both possess, but the creativity that would result was just about unparalleled in terms of hip-hop. Needless to say, their output has been some of the dopest stuff of recent years.

To showcase a small bit of what I'm talking about, I wanted to share this with you here. Below is an excerpt from my conversation with A-Trak where we spoke in particular about some of the more memorable moments with Kanye on tour in the Late Registration/Orchestration era:

Been meaning to share some thoughts on Jamie Lidell recently, but I'm not sure I've got anything revelatory to present. That said, I started to look around a bit and revisit the album that turned me on to this cat, and a couple things became apparent: (1) this dude is super talented and (2) although I'm not the only one who thinks he's terrific, there (apparently) are some who don't necessarily agree, according to some listener reviews, etc.

I don't know whether I needed the affirmation to write this, but it certainly gave me something to write about here...and that is, if you peep the Amazon page for the album 'Jim,' you're able to preview the songs but as well you can read reviews, etc. One of the reviews (pasted below here) is from another artist I'm particularly fond of, Esthero.

I see a lot of promise in Esthero's work, but perhaps even moreso in Lidell's. Regardless, she's a musician and a songwriter, so I'll let her words tell (have your dictionary handy) what this album is like...but in my words, I'll tell you that this record is one you should own and/or experience, no excuses:

My man Goldenchyld says you can't throw a rock in the Bay area and not hit a DJ, and I believe it. That said, the Fingerbangerz (who might could be going by The Bangerz these days) are head and shoulders above most, whether we're talking the Bay or elsewhere. You may have seen/heard them with The Jabbawockeez on America's Best Dance Crew or whatever, you may have seen them on tour, or you may have seen them killing shit in the greater San Jose neighborhood on any given night of the week.

Truth is, these cats can turn it out. I first heard of them when their debut album 'The Virus' dropped maybe back in 2004/2005 or so. From a production perspective, Goldenchyld, G-Wrex, Replay, Cutso, Ngobility and Square One got a good thing going. You can tell in listening to their stuff that they like to have a good time, and that's why I want to share this with you today.

My friend and co-worker Efim gave me a CD a while back just on the strength that it was something he thought I'd enjoy. Not that a CD is the most extravagant of gift's that a DJ or music-lover can get, but it's nice to have people who look out for you and have similar interests and appreciations. At the time, I was certainly familiar with the name Mark Ronson (and admittedly had some preconceived notions) but had not really heard much from the dude until I was passed this copy of his debut album 'Version.' It might have taken a couple listens to soak up all that the record contains, but I must say that this album is something to check for (now that it's been out for a couple years or whatever.) This is some funky, soulful stuff. Of course, it doesn't hurt that names like Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Kenna and others are featured vocalists on the record, but in truth I'm equally if not moreso impressed by the music here. Call it pop, call it soul, I don't know how you classify this otherwise, but I like this. Don't get it twisted, not everything on here suits me or is top-notch, but when it's right it's right. A couple (of the handful) of standouts are the Coldplay-inspired uptempo rendition of "God Put A Smile On Your Face" featuring the horn section from The Daptones and "Apply Some Pressure" featuring British singer Paul Smith.

On a similar note, I once gave a copy of 'Sounding Out the City' to my friend Monica and my description of the album was that it sounds just the way that it looks (below)...I'm not sure my words can truly do justice to how strong this record is. So, in this case with my buddy Efim, when it was time to return the favor, I once again offered up one of my own copies of 'Sounding Out the City,' the debut full-length from El Michels Affair. I told him the same thing I told Monica...it sounds just as it looks.

That said, if you've not heard this record, in short, you truly are missing out. Many people have spoken/written praise for El Michels Affair for their covers of Wu-Tang tracks, etc. (I got to see them live at XM a few years back with Wu doing that shit live...for real, one of the many beautiful perks of working at a place like XM,) but they truly shine when they do their own original stuff, and in most cases 'Sounding Out the City' is original stuff from the group (save for an Isaac Hayes cover.)

Soul, funk, whatever...this is good music. Take it in...

For whatever reason (pianos from Evidence + Defari monotone = success?) these records stay in my collection and will likely remain there for the foreseeable future. You need these records if you don't already have 'em. It's unfortunate because the dude Defari has not really ever been able to put together a solid album, but in terms of singles, he definitely did his thing. Maybe he was ahead of his time a bit since nowadays it's not albums that are being pushed but rather singles, EPs, etc. Then again, a few years back a hot single was the way you paved the path to making some noise (as evidenced by the entire ABB camp and much of the more prominent hip-hop artists of the era.) I'm not sure if that particular West Coast underground (read 'Dilated') sound is still hitting as of late, but these cats made some ill records. Not trying to hate on their recent stuff, but I just think a lot of their albums/projects have been somewhat forgettable, that is, when I've put in the effort to check them out. With that said, I have a ton of respect for Babu and the entire Beat Junkies crew, Defari, Evidence, Joey Chavez, ABB and everyone who crafted this sound and put(s) it down in LA and out west, because simply put, as a cat who grew up on the East Coast, this west-side stuff has been an acquired taste for me and remains some of the most progressive hip-hop music. Can't wait to hear some more of this type stuff from these dudes or whoever else got it like that (Are people still making actual hip-hop records in 2009??)

As for the sounds, some of my favorites, and surely some of his most popular joints, the homie Defari from the Likwit camp, Dilated, ABB, etc. The intro here features yet another bit from the aforementioned Cornerstone mixtapes, Tony Toca and Hi-Tek making it do what it do. Otherwise, Evidence on the beats, Defari on the mic, simple and plain, give thanks and maintain!

So a number of folks have been talking about the closing of DJ Hut here in DC. Obviously, this is a significant blow to all the DJs in the area, but as well for the music scene in some respect in my opinion. For as long as I've been in this city, DJ Hut (or 12 Inch Dance Records as it used to be known) has been a mainstay for all the area DJs, hip-hop, house, reggae/dancehall, whatever. I know the game has changed in terms of music sales (admittedly, in the past few years I can count the number of times I've shopped at DJ Hut on two hands,) especially for retail, but in addition to the city losing a point of purchase, we're losing a meeting place, a library, a town common, a musical oasis, all that. DJ Hut has been the place in DC (perhaps similar to a select couple other shops that have come and gone over the years) where you could go to hear the latest selections from the store staff and be able to test drive whatever was on the shelves and stay in the loop by grabbing the event flyers, etc.

DJ Hut had been the last store standing for some time now, so it's closing is particularly telling of where things are at.

For myself, I'd just like to say thanks to all the cats at DJ Hut and 12 Inch who over the years provided a spot for myself and everyone else in this area to come scoop the newest, freshest music. Thanks for keeping the doors open over the years through all the challenges that small businesses surely face in this city. But most of all, thanks for just being about the music and supporting the music community of DC. (I would be remiss to not give a shout to Capitol City Records which closed 2-3 years back and did a terrific job in cultivating the scene here as well.)

I'm also sorry that the business was not able to survive. I realize part of the reason they didn't survive is because cats like me didn't barely shop there in recent years, but that is what it is, just reality. Like I said, the game has changed. For some time I've been more inclined to shop and dig for more used than new music. But still, there is quality music being released in 2009, we just need to look for it sometimes, and this spot was one of the few places where you could find it.

I've been playing this mix a fair bit lately in my iPod, in the studio, you name it. On the real real real real real real real real REal real rEAL...the dude Drastik is pretty nice with his.

Definitely (in terms of rockability) is up there with some of my favorites (Dirty South Dance, Live from Body English, So Fly, etc.)

Being as it is that I don't really get behind too many albums these days, 'Los Angeles' was one of the few records that really made an impression this year.

Yeah, ok, so real quick, couple things for ya...

so that you can support the musicians whose music I play (and I KNOW you all already do that anyway...u know, show love, spend money on music in 2008...right? of course you do) so yeah, support those who impact your life in a positive way, I think they call it karma or something...do the right thing.

Considering how bad SNL was for the longest time, I have to imagine that NBC (and probably Lorne Michaels as well) are counting their lucky stars these days to have some of the new writers and talent on their weekly staff. In fact, I'd be curious to see the ratings over the years for the show, just to see how many viewers they lost over the past 5-10 years. There are certainly still some weak links on the cast (I see you Kenan), but with cats like Andy Samberg and those other two dudes, the show is in a much better place. Anyways, it's about time they got their act together.

As I was saying, SNL has only become watchable again in the past few years really. Kanye's post-Katrina appearance in 2005 was dope, and then he killed it again on the 2007 season premiere hosted by Lebron James. If you can find them online, check the videos of Kanye's performances from either 2005 (Gold Digger/Touch the Sky & Heard Em Say) or 2007 (Stronger/Good Life & Champion/Everything I Am)...in all cases, pretty sick, especially with the live string section. But with that said, it must be said that Lebron definitely showed his acting chops as well.

Another name that definitely needs to be mentioned as we talk about the reemergence of SNL is Justin Timberlake. For those of you J. Timberlake haters out there, check your ego at the door because his stints as host on SNL have been quite possibly the most memorable shows in recent years...consistent throughout.

I went out the other week to this event at the 9:30 Club hosted by Red Bull called the Big Tune competition. Nottz was a featured performer, and though I recognized his name, I couldn't really put the name to any tracks off the top...it soon came to my attention that he was responsible for this from 'Extinction Level Event' and this from 'Graduation' (one of just a few other producers credited on Kanye's latest.) Outside of those, I've been a big fan of "W.O.L.V.E.S." which is off the Training Day soundtrack, but the tune that really caught my attention was the joint he opened up with as his hype-man was setting the stage a bit. I couldn't place it, so I asked him the name of it afterwards when I saw him outside the venue...a little Motown flavor for ya, Edwin Starr - Easin In.

Anyway, there were some good producers involved in the competition (K. Murdock of Panacea, Young Slim, Best Kept Secret, etc.) and an energetic performance from Wale, who seems to be a favorite of some/many these days, or at least a buzzworthy name. He was good, I'll give him that...good energy, good music, all around, dude did his thing.

In between competitors/performers, the DJ was playing some tracks, and it turns out that he was actually spinning DVDs which was kinda cool...interesting to see some of the music videos showing on the big screens for the joints he was spinning. At one point he was playing 'Da Rockwilder' from Meth and Red, which was a dope little jam when it came out at the beginning of this decade, but even more memorable than the track, was the video. It got me to thinking about some of the videos from that era (late 90's, early 00's) and some of the video directors, including the cat who did the 'Rockwilder' video, Dave Meyers. Many of the videos back then really defined the tracks that blew up cats like Cash Money and their whole crew (surprisingly, I don't believe Meyers did any videos for Cash Money, but it sparked the idea and his name is the one that stands out the most.) Of course, keep in mind that this was in a different time when heads would spend a huge budget on a video because there were not countless outlets for music videos yet, and in order to get your video played, it needed to be big. Nowadays, the math just doesn't make sense (obviously.) Back to the lecture at hand though, many of the joints that really blew up around this time had dope videos, and while I don't find myself checking MTV2/Jamz/VHI Soul/Fuse/etc. nearly as much as I did years ago, I don't think these type videos are being made as much. The look they accomplished was pretty impactful. Here's some of the vids from those days that stand out:

As many people as there are that know his name and are just generally familiar with who he is, I'm not sure if quite enough people are checking for Z-Trip as much as they should. Dude cut his teeth over the years in front of crowds (extra) large and small, home and abroad, hip-hop and otherwise. Z clearly bridges the gap...one of those select few artists who gets the nod to open up for legends such as The Rolling Stones, and I'm sure others. But when it's all said and done, hip-hop is what it's all about. Anyway...I want to put you on to a few things that I keep in my collection that I think you should know about, kind of on some stream of consciousness tip.

Some of these tracks are more readily available, some stuff you'd have to track down, but all pretty dope. First things first, "Soundclash" is available as a free download over at Z's site...not a whole lot to say about it, but dude makes some great remixes/edits/mashups/whatever. Updating a classic Dawn Penn record never seemed so easy. Next up is an exclusive bit from 'Ahead of the Curve,' just a little sample (featuring Gift of Gab in this instance) of what you're getting from that collaborative mix project from Lateef and Z...definitely far from your average. I've also included a couple pieces from 'New Math,' the debut (and only?) album from some of Z's comrades, the Backyard Bangers, E. Moss & Troublemaker. And, finally, connecting the dots once again, a selection from my man 2tall.

2tall is definitely one of my favorite DJ/producers. Progressive, amazing talent, and consistent. "Coaster" is off a 3-track digital EP that was released a few years back around the time his debut 'Shifting Tides' dropped. The EP was not initially intended for commercial release, but, according to the man himself, due to some hefty stateside radio support, he decided to give the EP a proper release through Bleep. I put this mix together just recently as a demo of sorts, really just something to move the crowd. It includes some electro/house/hip-hop stuff and some straight club and hip-hop stuff as well, ranging from independent/progressive to big mainstream radio hits. Folks who know me may be surprised with some of these selections, but it's all about the context and the vibe... I understand that not everyone can tell a good DJ from a mediocre/wack DJ, and some folks dig deeper than others in their music listening habits, so I'm trying to bridge the gap a bit with some more recognizable tracks and some less known tracks.

Over the years I've become familiar with and had the pleasure to listen to and learn from a lot of dope DJs, where skill and crate knowledge were the primary job requirements. I'm not sure if those attributes are as much the case with your average "DJ" in 2008, but that's where I come from, and that's what I'm trying to do. I first heard of Sa-Ra Creative Partners back when Pharoah’s “Agent Orange” single came out, probably the same time everyone else would’ve first caught wind of these cats. Their name itself sounds like they’re a hair salon or something, so needless to say I had no clue who they were, but then again, they were brand new on the scene. Considering how few releases they’ve put out over the years, it always surprised me how much hype they’d gotten. Still, apparently their talents were evident enough to be signed to deals with both Sound In Color and Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, though unfortunately all that would result from these two situations was a single 6-track EP (a fairly lackluster one at that if you ask me.)

For whatever reason though, I still check for these cats, and so when I came across their first full-length recently, I picked it up to see what the real deal is. Released in 2007 via independent label Babygrande, “The Hollywood Recordings” is (if nothing else) a good look at what they’re capable of. With nearly 20 tracks on the album, there is definitely a bunch of filler and just straight-up mediocre material, too much to really speak on this project as a cohesive album or even to rate it particularly high as a collective. However, there are definitely moments that stand out and suggest that some of the hype has been warranted in years past.

I want to compare them (on some level) to Organized Noize…funk, soul, intergalactic isht. Or as they describe themselves: Afro Magnetic Electronic Spiritualism. I wouldn’t go as far as to say these two groups are on the same level, but Sa-Ra is heading in the right direction, and I’m hopeful that they keep doing what they do because the future looks (potentially) bright. It sounds like they may have a major label debut ready or in the works, but who knows if/when that will arrive.

or really just straight jacking for beats. But I’ve got no problem with it (why would I?), especially when the source material is this nice. I’ve come across this tune a bunch of times recently so I figured I’d put the pieces together and put it out there a bit.

The names Holland and Dozier are attached to the original tune from Dionne Warwick’s 1973 album Just Being Myself. If you’re a Motown head, that probably means something to you. Not much to say about this music, except that I’m glad to have it in my collection. To know that these cats created this 35 years ago is crazy to me. Those dudes were on something else. Jay Dee, Just Blaze and Holland and Dozier all on a same plane seems to make sense too.

The DJ is the Cornerstone of Hip-Hop

When I was in school, I spent some time working for The FADER magazine/Cornerstone promotion out of NY. This is when I first discovered the Cornerstone mixtape. Back then (a bit moreso than today,) these joints were pretty consistent and on point. Cats like Babu, Jazzy Jeff, Vice, Hi-Tek, Tony Touch, and many other top-notch producers and DJs were at the helm from month to month doing what they do.

I could probably post some other dope moments from past Cornerstone tapes, but I'll focus on the man who I think has best represented on these mixtapes over the years: DJ Premier. Premo always seems to have more input as far as the tracklist goes when he is hosting the tape (which certainly helps set him apart,) but he also brings more quality music and exclusive music to the table. And not your typical 'exclusive' as other fools point out on their mixtapes...we're talking dope tracks that you can't get elsewhere, but wish you could.

The audio here is (mostly) from Mixtape #47, where Premo and Green Lantern hosted (right around the time D&D closed if I'm not mistaken.) The first part of the audio is how the mixtape opens...Guru setting the stage. Next up is Ras Kass. If you recall, when Ras was still held captive by Capitol, the single 'Golden Chyld' sort of made the rounds...classic record. Ras Kass in top form, and Premier likewise. Finally, I'd never heard of Connekt 4, but it's a nice little track and just a simple example of how Premier does his own thing and breaks new music (maybe not to the masses necessarily, but he breaks records no less.)

Beyond Real

Growing up, electronic music to me was more corny than anything, probably because I only heard lame club music and trance-type stuff on the radio. Working and interning at certain spots, and just living and DJing a bit in DC and NY over the years though has exposed me to the world of electronic music. I definitely now have a much greater respect and appreciation for the different genres of electronic music, especially house.

One record I came across early in my days of discovering house music, etc. was from Spinna. I realize for many that it seems all too obvious how dope Spinna is with his house production, but regardless, I'm glad I have this record in my collection, and I think it's a great entry-level (if there is such a thing) house record for beginners like I was (and am.) For those of you who don't mess with house, check this joint before you dismiss the genre like I used to. For those of you who are house lovers, you already know the deal.

Where to start. I don't normally write a whole lot, so I think I'll keep this brief so as to make it as painless as possible and to keep my ego intact beyond day one.

Welcome to My Soul For Real No Doubt. This is where I plan to post music-related things...audio, video, links, you know the deal.

Me, my name is Mike. I'm a DJ, been doing it since the mid-90's when I was in high school. I love music in general, but hip-hop is really my thing. I love learning about new styles and sounds, and as a DJ, sometimes that's reflected in how I spin records. At least I'd like to think so. Much of what this blog will be about is hip-hop, and how I've grown to understand and love and maybe even live the culture.
